๐ STEM Challenge #1: Build the Strongest Paper Bridge
STEM Focus: Engineering & Physics
Materials
- Printer paper
- Books or cups
- Pennies, washers, or small weights
Challenge
Can your student build a paper bridge that holds the most weight?
Encourage them to experiment with different designs:
- Flat bridge
- Folded accordion bridge
- Rolled tube supports
- Triangular folds
Ask These Questions
- Which design held the most weight?
- Why was it stronger?
- How does this relate to real bridges?
Extension: Research famous bridges around the world.
๐ STEM Experiment #2: Homemade Volcano
STEM Focus: Chemistry
Materials
- Baking soda
- Vinegar
- Dish soap
- Food coloring
- Small bottle
Mix baking soda into the bottle, add dish soap and food coloring, then pour in vinegar to create an exciting chemical reaction.
Discuss
- What gas is being produced?
- Is this a physical or chemical change?
- Why does the eruption happen?
Extension: Compare different amounts of baking soda and vinegar.
